News Around Boulder Colorado

New Building Initiatives at the University of Colorado—Boulder

The University of Colorado has seen an explosion of new construction the past few years, with some phenomenal results.

This fall, construction was complete on both the Wolf Law Building and the ATLAS building—both of which feature cutting edge technology and incredible architecture.

Current projects include the renovation of the Business School, which will reopen in the fall of 2007 and  major improvements and projects on various fields around campus.   Most notably, there will be a new and improved Farrand Field, also set to finish during the 2007 fall semester.

In addition,  there is talk of a 24-hr study wing to Norlin library, and a brand new, state of the art Art and Architecture building.

An impressive research institute

CU-Boulder is well-know for its advances in research and technology.  Many of its programs are consistently ranked among the top in the country.  Students at the University who have yet to decide on their major, or those who are looking to experience unique classes, should check out the fall schedule in these departments.

Boulder Goes Green

The University of Colorado at Boulder is committed to making the campus as environmentally friendly as possible.  In recent years, this has included a major campus wide recycling program along with an ongoing effort to make all new construction meet the Federally established Green Building guidelines.

Of course, the city of Boulder is also strong advocate for introducing environmentally sustainable practices.  This exists on both the governmental level and on the local level, with Boulder residents working hard to protect their beautiful surroundings.

Breaking Ground– University of Colorado Continues its Building Goals

Beginning the summer of 2007 the University of Colorado Boulder will break ground on its brand new Visual Arts Complex.  Like all new buildings on the University of Colorado campus, the Visual Arts Complex is designed to achieve LEED Certification for environmental sustainability, helping to make the University of Colorado Boulder an environmentally friendly campus.

The new Visual Arts Complex is set to house the Department of Art and Art History, along with the University of Colorado Art Museum.

Homecoming Upset!!

The University of Colorado Buffaloes upset the #3 Oklahoma Sooners last weekend in a stunning Homecoming victory of 27-24!  Buff fans and players alike held their breath as the clock ran out during Kevin Eberhart’s field goal attempt.  It seems Dan Hawkins and the Buffaloes have finally come together—as faithful Buff fans knew they would.

On a Saturday full of upsets, the CU/Oklahoma game was by far the best.  It was sweet redemption in the face of an extremely rocky past few years.  Delivering a blow that knocked the Oklahoma Sooners down to #10 in national rankings, the University of Colorado Buffaloes began to resemble the program of old, where wins of this caliber were not considered upsets but probabilities.

Stay tuned as the Hawkins’ era in Boulder turns a new page!  It will no doubt be exciting, and perhaps even more stunning then we saw this last weekend.

Get Ready for Ski and Snowboard Season

Get your skis and boards ready!!  Snow is already starting to fall in the high country.  If this winter is anything like the last, the snow will be amazing at all of Colorado’s resorts.

Passes are the only way to go if you plan on hitting the slopes at least a few times!  Check out vendors that will come to the University of Colorado and various sporting good stores or go online to get your passes, but definitely don’t miss out on experiencing legendary Colorado snow!

Surprising Donation

CU Professor Dr. Marv Caruthers donated $20 Million to the University of Colorado to begin funding for a new biotechnology facility—which is slated to open in 2010.  This proposed facility will be designed to allow scientists from a number of different fields to come together and work jointly on projects under the same roof.

Fall in Colorado

If this is your first year at the University of Colorado, you definitely want to check out some of the great events around Colorado during the fall.  Of course there is the annual leaf peeping to kick off the season, but there are also some fantastic events in and around Boulder for you to check out.

International Wine Festival                      Downtown Boulder Fall Festival

Fright Fest                                                First Bite Boulder

Downtown Denver Holiday Lights            Georgetown Christmas Market

Big 12 Competition Heats Up!

Good news Buff fans!!  After not having a chance to watch our Colorado Buffaloes run all over Baylor last Saturday, this weekend’s game at Kansas State will be televised nationally!  This has the makings of another exciting game, considering the fact that Kansas State won big time against (the #7) Texas in Austin, and that our University of Colorado Buffaloes are on the rise.  Tune in to support the Buffaloes in another major Big 12 match up.  Let’s keep Colorado at the top of the Big 12 North.  Go Buffs!

In other Buff news, the long awaited practice bubble is finally up.  So although the weather has stayed nice so far this fall, the University of Colorado Buffaloes look forward to breaking it in.

The Louvre at Your Fingertips!

The Denver Art Museum opened an exhibit over the weekend entitled “Artisans and Kings: Selected Treasures from the Louvre.”  For those of you who can’t afford to actually go to the Louvre, this is the perfect opportunity to experience stunning art.  It runs through January 6, and you can get more information here

Buffs Are On A Roll!

The Colorado Buffaloes pulled off a fantastic victory over Texas Tech last Saturday!  Cody Hawkins lead his team to a nearly flawless performance, beating the favored Red Raiders.  And as all you Buff fans know, they plan to continue their improvement through the last three games.  Colorado hosts Missouri this week, who is ranked #9 in the nation.  Though Missouri looks great this year, the Buffaloes definitely stand a chance!

Great news for the University of Colorado (especially after a disappointing previous year)- one more win and CU becomes bowl eligible!

Solar Decathlon

University of Colorado Engineering and Architecture students are in Washington D.C. this week hoping to win their third consecutive championship at the Solar Decathlon.  Run by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Decathlon attracts university teams hoping to design the most efficient (and attractive) solar home.  In both previous competitions, after CU students have won, their houses have made their way back to the University of Colorado to go on display.  So cross you’re fingers and wait for an opportunity to see a truly unique home!

Denver Performing Arts

The Denver Performing Arts Complex is known for its amazing shows.  If you’ve never seen a play (or one you liked) check out their line up this fall, you will be glad you went!  It is full of big productions, such as Pride and Prejudice, Diary of Anne Frank, and White Christmas!

Or if you can wait until next year, you can catch the next Cirque adventure, Stomp and My Fair Lady!

Buffalo Basketball

Basketball season opens this Friday (Nov 9) for the University of Colorado men’s team, and next Friday (Nov 16) for the women’s team.  Both the men and women face tough schedules, as they will each play a number of teams that made it to the tournaments last year in addition to a traditionally tough Big 12 conference schedule.

The men also have a new coach, Jeff Bzdelik, who coached at the Air Force Academy the past two years, where he was highly successful.  Buff fans are hopeful that he can bring much of that success to the University of Colorado.  We shall see what the season brings!

Rough Days in Buffalo Country

After a heart breaking loss to Missouri at home last week, the Buffaloes hope to rebound against Iowa State this Saturday.  The game should be interesting.  In spite of Iowa State’s losing record this year, they did manage to beat Kansas State (who we lost to a few weeks ago).  Keep your fingers cross Buff fans.  If we win this one, we become bowl eligible!

Heartbreaking Loss in Iowa!

The University of Colorado’s bowl eligibility hopes have to wait until after Thanksgiving.  CU was hoping to clinch their sixth win against Iowa State last week, but suffered a heartbreaking loss in the end.  To make matters worse, two field goal attempts that would have put the Buffaloes into overtime were called back by two suspicious calls by the referee.

Now CU faces its last regular season game against Nebraska next week.  Nebraska, who hasn’t looked so good this year, pulled off a big win last weekend.  So the Buffs face a challenge in the traditionally exciting Thanksgiving weekend event!

Good Sports News for Colorado

Although the University of Colorado football team has struggled the last few weeks, Colorado sports fans had a few other victories to cheer about!  The Denver Broncos (finally) pulled off a big win on Sunday, only a day after the Air Force Academy ran all over Notre Dame.

Also making for a happy fall is the fact that the Colorado Avalanche have logged a phenomenal start the season!  The Colorado College and DU hockey teams have followed suit, with what promises to be very exciting seasons.

Mark Your Calendars for Some Big Name Speakers!!

Love them or hate them, some major figures from Washington D.C. are slated to speak at CU this academic year.  Regardless of your feelings toward them, this is a fantastic opportunity to engage in serious issues!

On November 27, John Ashcroft (former Attorney General of the US) will be speaking at 7 pm in Macky Auditorium.

And on April 17, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will be coming to Macky Auditorium, also at 7 pm.
